2018 CALACS Graduate Essay Prize

The Canadian Association for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CALACS) calls for submissions for the 2018 Graduate Essay Prize to be awarded at the 2018 CALACS Congress in Montreal, Quebec held May 16 to 18 at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). This award recognizes the most outstanding essay presented by a graduate student at the 2018 CALACS Congress.
- Applicants must be registered in a graduate program at a recognized university and be CALACS student members.
- Applicants must present their paper at the 2018 CALACS Congress.
- The paper must be unpublished and not yet approved for publication.
- Co-authorships will be accepted as long as the students are affiliated with community organizations or are presented together with community researchers. The co-authors can not be professors or have already obtained a PhD.
- The recipient is expected to attend Congress and the Award Ceremony. While students are encouraged to apply to CALACS for financial assistance to attend the Congress through the Congress website, these funds are limited and are thus not guaranteed.
- The applicant may be registered in a masters or doctoral program inside or outside of Canada. Doctoral students must not have defended their dissertation prior to the submission deadline.
- An abstract of the paper must first be submitted to and accepted by the CALACS 2018 Congress Organizing Committee, respecting the deadlines on the general Call for Papers. The deadline for receipt of proposals for panels or individual papers is January 31, 2018.
- Applicants should indicate their intention to submit an essay for consideration by the Awards jury by writing to email@example.com at the time of abstract submission. Please also indicate the planned language of the paper. This is to help us with jury selection. Expressions of interest should be submitted by March 1, 2018.
- Papers should be submitted electronically to firstname.lastname@example.org and should indicate your program and university affiliation. Students may be asked to submit a proof of student status after the essay's submission. The deadline for receipt of final papers is March 15, 2018. We will notify participants of the results on or shortly after May 1, 2018.
Guidelines for papers:
- Papers should be no longer than 20 double-spaced pages including bibliography, footnotes, figures and appendices.
- Papers should be submitted using standard margins in 12-point font with appropriate referencing.
- Papers will be evaluated following a double-blind review process, thus please submit 1) a title page with your name and affiliation and 2) an anonymous copy of the essay.
- Papers may be submitted in English, French, Portuguese, or Spanish.
- The evaluation committee will not review papers that do not conform to these guidelines.
